Follow @9jaLife The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, yesterday disclosed that officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army were leaking vital information on military operations to the Boko Haram insurgents. Ihejirika, who made the disclosure yesterday warned men of the Nigerian Army to desist from such terrible acts or face the music. He read the riot act in Abuja at the opening ceremony of a three-day Army Transformation Seminar with the theme “Building capacity of the Nigerian Army to meet contemporary challenges.” The COAS said: “Let me use this opportunity to warn officers and soldiers who indulge in giving out information both from Army Headquarters and other formations certain vital information that had one way or the other worked negatively in our operations. “There are also some other soldiers that have been found posting negative comments in the internet and also some had been engaged in conversing with insurgents.” He said any officer or soldier linked, one way or the other, to the insurgents would be sanctioned. To buttress this point, the Army chief disclosed that a soldier that gave out information on the movement of troops to Mali and were subsequently attacked near Okene, Kogi State, had been apprehended and he would be court-martialled. Ihejirika said the seminar could not have come at a better time when the country was grappling with security challenges, some of which threaten the nation’s corporate existence. He said that the Directorate of Military Intelligence, DMI, the Military Police and commanders in the field had been encouraged to continue the monitoring activity, adding that military service was based on patriotism. Ihejirika, however, said he was impressed with the choice of theme of the seminar. “I have also noted that series of lecture outlined in the programme, which is centred on management and human resource development in the Army. The theme was central to the attainment of my vision which is “to transform the Army to a force better ableto meet contemporary challenges.” Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Thompson Sekibo, commended the Army for the sacrifice it had made in the line of duty and in furtherance of national interest and cohesion. He noted the steadfastness [...]

Follow @9jaLife NO fewer than 22 more Ogun State civil servants were Thursday arrested and interrogated by officials of the Criminal Investigations Department of the state Police Command in Abeokuta over their alleged involvement in the N200 million West African Examination Council (WAEC) fees’ fraud. Those questioned were officials of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology among whom were some Zonal Education Officers (ZEOs). As at the time of filing this report, the suspects were still being interrogated, so it was not clear whether they would be detained after their interrogation or not. But four top officials in the ministry, two of whom were said to be directors, had been detained at the Police Command headquarters, Eleweran, since Monday for their alleged involvement in the crime. The suspects are being interrogated for being members of a syndicate that had, in the past three years, swindled the state government of N200 million through the payment of WAEC fees for secondary school students. As part of its free education policy, the government pays the WAEC fees for all secondary school students in the state whose number is put at thousands. Police investigations have so far revealed that the fraud was perpetrated through inflation of list of WAEC candidates in public schools by adding the names of candidates in private schools or tutorial centres. The crime was said to have been committed by the suspects, with the connivance of some private school proprietors. The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Olusegun Odubela, while answering a reporter’s question on the issue, stated that he was yet to get full details about the fraud but urged members of the public to furnish the Police with the necessary information that would assist them to unravel all those behind the fraud and the actual amount involved. He, however, confirmed that all those implicated during the ministry’s preliminary investigations have been handed over to the Police, adding: “I promise that I will not hesitate to hand over others that are found culpable in the alleged fraud”. Odubela added that the state government would not fold its arms and allow such dastardly act to continue, assuring that the outcome from the [...]

Follow @9jaLife Michael ‘Mujaheed’ Adebolaja, a 20-year old British Nigerian is identified as one of the two men who hacked to death a serving British soldier in a street near an army barracks in London yesterday. Adebolaja, an alleged a Muslim convert, who answers his Muslim name ‘Mujaheed’, meaning one who fights jihad and goes about preaching the word of God in the last few weeks, was filmed by an onlooker and broadcasted by Britain’s ITV news channel with hands covered in blood and holding a bloodied knife and praising God for the murder. In the clip, Adebolaja, looking agitated and angry, said: “I apologize that women had to witness that, but in our lands our women have to see the same thing. “You people will never be safe. Remove your government. They don’t care about you.” He could have been referring to Afghanistan, where British troops are part of the international force supporting the Kabul government in its fight against Taliban insurgents. Prime Minister David Cameron, who cut short his trip to France to chair an emergency national security meeting, said the attack appeared to be a politically motivated attack. “It is the most appalling crime,” Cameron said. “The police are urgently seeking the full facts about this case but there are strong indications that it is a terrorist incident.” “We have had these sorts of attacks before in our country and we never buckle in the face of them,” he added. London was last hit by a serious militant attack in July 2005, when four young Islamists set off suicide bombs on the public transport network, killing 52 people and wounding hundreds. A similar attempted attack two weeks later was thwarted. British counter-terrorism chiefs have recently warned that radicalized individuals, so-called “lone wolves” who might have had no direct contact with al-Qaida posed as great a risk as those who plotted attacks on the lines of the 2005 attacks. Local residents expressed shock at Wednesday’s killing. “That this can happen in the centre of a busy town, it’s really really shocking and traumatizing for everybody, all local residents,” a witness who gave her name as Tenisan told Reuters in a nearby street.
